Three islands

The islands of meeting, love and parting

Locals fondly call Pakoštane's three islets the islands of meeting, love and parting. We circle all three, each with its own story above and below the surface.

Babuljaš

Babuljaš

The northernmost of the three, tufted with pines and ringed by white-pebble shallows. Two sheep live here all 365 days of the year, the island's only permanent residents. Archaeologists have lifted amphorae from its seabed, and people swear there's something yellow down below, maybe even a rather odd pineapple. Keep watching the window.

Veli Školj

Veli Školj

The middle islet of our route. In the channel beside it rests a genuine ancient shipwreck from around 400 AD, amphora cargo and all. As we glide over it, the audio guide tells you what happened that night. Fun fact: a chain as thick as your arm runs across the bottom here, and locals joke it's what keeps Veli Školj tethered, so it won't drift off chasing the sun each summer.

Sveta Justina

Sveta Justina

The islet with the chapel of St. Justina, patron of Pakoštane. Justina was a martyr from Padua, and Venice named her protector of these waters because its great victory at Lepanto, in 1571, fell on her feast day, the 7th of October. The townsfolk raised this chapel in her honour, on the foundations of an older one. Towards the mainland an ancient submerged breakwater, the 'Roman road', runs beneath the sea; they say someone still walks it at night.
